The opportunity arose to
work with advanced timber construction: the cultural and environmental authenticity
of the site could be artistically explored. Maintaining trees right up to the
boundaries of all buildings, a range of architectural themes were developed
to create 11 new house types, ranging from a small work / studio of 65m2 (the
smallhouse) to a family / work environment of 200m2 (the bighouse). This range
provided not only the ‘instruments’ for choice and diversity, but
the ‘instruments’ to create key urban meeting and orientation points.
While a housing estate in terms of the singularity of suburban functions, the
project proposes other key aspects of what could become a potential ‘sustainable
community’, a ‘score’ for diverse living styles and an ‘orchestra’
of architectural instruments.
