The Joseph Rowntree Foundation initiated a limited competition
for the creation of a new community, 100 years after the achievement of New
Earswick. Aire Design's proposal, the preferred strategy of the people living
in the surrounding built-up areas, is predicated on the 'planted town' as precedent,
not as before, a military device, but for the needs of our times - a sustainability
device - attempting to be as clear about priorities today as the Garden Cities
of a century ago were about their time. The house too has new roles to play
to suit contemporary demands, while still maintaining its role as 'hearth'.
